Finding a Quality San Diego Black and Grey Tattoo Artist

San Diego Black and Grey Tattoo Artists

The medium of black and grey tattooing for many years has had the stereotype of being associated with prison cell gang markings or back alley discount scratchers. The truth of the matter is that the art form of black and grey tattooing has walked off the streets and into some of the finest art galleries in the world. What started as a single needle form of tattooing by using only black ink to create imagery, and while that style of traditional black and grey tattooing still exists today, the medium has grown into something that can only be described as modern artistic mastery.

The medium has grown to include artistic styles that include portraiture, photo-realism, fine line script, geometric, and surrealism to name a few. There are some very talented San Diego artists that have taken the medium to a new level. Using a restricted color palette challenges these artists to create imagery that requires a talented hand to combine black ink with grey tones to create a finished product that exceeds their clients expectations.

This article features six local San Diego artists that are highly talented in the medium of black and grey tattooing. Each of these artists is proficient in their area of expertise and have been artists their entire lives. They specialize in black and grey tattooing but please take the time to explore their other artistic talents. Many of them are great painters, musicians, and well-rounded artists. Explore their talents beyond their tattooing and find an artist that fits your style.

The medium of black and grey tattooing is still evolving. If you are looking for an artist that can deliver your idea for a portrait, rendering of your favorite macabre horror film character, or transforming a profound saying into a fine line script this is the place to look. Not every artist is skilled at every form of this art form, so do your homework and find an artist that fits your style.

I started me tattooing career doing all types of tattoos, my motivation back then was to tattoo, simply that. Some of the things that I find attractive about black and grey tattooing are the elegance of the color black, the impact that it has in the skin, and that it doesn't lose it's contrast to the skin over the years as much as color. As well, black allows for finer lines with more precision, and more fluid shading. During the first years I was already doing geometric tattoos but it took me some time and technique to realize that was the style that what I wanted to focus on. I am inspired by the ancient designs, the tribal cultures of Africa and India have given me much inspiration over the years, as well as in my day-to-day life.I also enjoy working with color but one of the biggest reasons that I work in my style today is because of the demand for it. It's because people have seen something special with the style that I have devoted my time to. Many thanks to them and the art.

Why I enjoy Black and Grey. The Main reason I enjoy black and grey is because I do not have to figure out what colors to use. I can just jump into it and start creating and It seems to be is a lot easier on my eyes. I find that multiple colors tends to give me an eye ache if you will. Plus with the application of tattoos in general you can get a more realistic look, without compromising the integrity of the tattoo. I love black and grey could do it everyday!

Black and Grey tattooing is one of my specialties because of the way black ink stands out, the fine lines, soft shadows and the realism you can project from this particular style of tattooing. I also like the fact that black and grey tattoo work seems to hold up better over time verses color work, since less ink is required the sun has less of a effect on the artwork. From the way the shadowing is done, to how the line work looks. Its just something about being able to bring forth something very personal threw the work. From portraits of passed loved ones, to the very big detailed piece I'm doing on my wife. I enjoy doing color and black and grey, honestly tattooing is what drives me and I am very blessed with what I've been chosen to do.

Black and grey tattooing is my favorite medium, and has been since I got my first professional tattoo in 1987. There's just something special and long lasting about a tattoo done in black and grey that is hard to put into words. History, tradition, future... Kinda like looking at an old time photo, that feeling you get, ya know?

When the blacks are vibrant and the highlights are bright, I think the style and look of a properly done black and grey tattoo is timeless and complimentary to all skin types.
